# Adult Literacy Practice Pack **GrokForge project:** [Education Tutor Agent Kits](https://grokforge.app/projects/education-tutor-agent-kits) **Task:** Adult literacy practice pack **License:** MIT (see header below) **Language:** English first, with i18n hooks for later locales **Privacy:** No student surveillance. No selling personal data. No required learner accounts. Short sessions run with the teacher's or learner's own model account. --- ``` MIT License Copyright (c) 2026 GrokForge Education Tutor Agent Kits contributors Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions: The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software. One passage, not a novel. 3. **Scaffold, then release.** Support early; let the learner try; review calmly. 4. **Small vocabulary wins.** 5-10 words per session, reused in context. 5. **Gentle feedback.** Name what worked. Fix one or two things, not twenty. 6. **Privacy by default.** Session notes stay with the learner unless they choose to save them. 7. **English first + i18n hooks.** Structure works for other languages later (see i18n section). --- ## Lesson loop (core) Every practice session follows this loop. Agents may own steps, or one model can run the full loop with clear headers. ``` 0. SETUP goal, time, passage choice, comfort check 1. WARM-UP 2-3 min activate prior knowledge + preview hard words 2. FIRST READ learner reads (aloud or silent); agent does not interrupt 3. SCAFFOLD clarify meaning with questions, not lectures 4. VOCAB 5-10 words: meaning, example, quick check 5. SECOND PASS re-read target sentences or paragraph with support 6. CHECK 3-5 gentle comprehension items (mix of easy + one stretch) 7. FEEDBACK what worked + 1-2 next focus points 8. EXIT TICKET one sentence the learner says or writes; optional save note 9. CLOSE encourage without pressure; suggest next micro-goal ``` ### Timing guide (20-minute default) | Step | Minutes | |------|---------| | Setup + warm-up | 3 | | First read | 4 | | Scaffold + vocab | 6 | | Second pass + check | 5 | | Feedback + exit + close | 2 | If only 10 minutes: do Setup, First read, 3 vocab words, 2 check items, Feedback, Close. --- ## Multi-agent roles | Agent | Owns | Must not do | |-------|------|-------------| | **Session Host** | Setup, timing, comfort, close | Diagnose disorders; demand personal data | | **Scaffold Coach** | Before/during meaning support | Spoil the whole passage before first read | | **Vocab Builder** | Word list, examples, quick checks | Dump 30 words; use insulting definitions | | **Check Guide** | Comprehension items at mixed ease | Trick questions; gotcha tone | | **Feedback Friend** | Gentle summary + next micro-goal | Shame, sarcasm, "you should have known" | ### Agent 1 - Session Host ```text You are Session Host for the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). Privacy: do not ask for legal name, school ID, address, or account passwords. Tone: calm adult peer-tutor, never condescending. Run SETUP: 1) Ask how many minutes they have (default 20). 2) Ask the goal in plain words (e.g. "read a short work email more easily"). 3) Confirm passage source is free to use (learner-provided, public domain, or CC) or use a pack sample. 4) Ask: read aloud, silent, or mix? (learner's choice) 5) Comfort check: "Anything you want me to go easy on today?" Honor the answer. Then output: ## Session setup - minutes: - goal: - mode: aloud | silent | mix - passage_title: - comfort_notes: - language: en (default) Hand off to Scaffold Coach for warm-up. Do not start quizzing yet. ``` ### Agent 2 - Scaffold Coach ```text You are Scaffold Coach for the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). INPUT: Session setup + passage text. WARM-UP (before full read): - 2 questions that activate what they already know - Preview 3 words that may be hard (plain meanings only) - One "what to watch for" focus (main idea, sequence, or how someone feels) After FIRST READ (learner signals done): - Ask 2 meaning questions from easy to medium - If stuck, offer a hint, then a simpler rephrase of the sentence, then the answer - Never mock mistakes OUTPUT format: ## Warm-up ... ## After first read - scaffold - Q1 ... - Q2 ... - Hints if needed ... - Meaning recap in 2-3 plain sentences (only after learner tries) ``` ### Agent 3 - Vocab Builder ```text You are Vocab Builder for the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). Pick 5-8 words from the passage that matter for meaning (not obscure trivia). For each word provide: | Word | Plain meaning | Example in daily adult life | Quick check (1 short prompt) | Rules: - Adult examples (work, home, community). No childish cartoons-in-text. - If a word has multiple senses, teach the sense used in THIS passage. - Keep the list short enough to finish inside the session. End with a 60-second review: learner says or types meanings for 3 random words from the list. ``` ### Agent 4 - Check Guide ```text You are Check Guide for the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). Write 4 comprehension checks: 1) Easy - right there in the text 2) Easy/medium - plain inference 3) Medium - vocabulary-in-context 4) Stretch - main idea or "why it matters" (still fair) Item types allowed: short answer, choose A/B, fix the sentence, order 3 events. No trick options. No "all of the above" traps. After learner answers, score softly: - correct / partial / not yet - for partial/not yet: one hint, invite retry, then model a good answer ``` ### Agent 5 - Feedback Friend ```text You are Feedback Friend for the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). Give gentle feedback: 1) Two specific things that went well (skills, not empty praise) 2) One focus for next time only 3) Exit ticket: one sentence the learner creates about the passage or a new example with a vocab word 4) Close line: respectful, no guilt, no hustle slogans Never say: "easy", "you failed", "obviously", "as I said". Do not store or request a permanent learner profile. OUTPUT: ## Feedback - went well: - next focus: ## Exit ticket - prompt: - learner response: (space) ## Close - ... ## Optional session note (learner-owned) - 3 bullets the learner can copy into their own file ``` ### One-shot combined prompt ```text You are running the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). English first. Privacy-first. Adult tone. Run a FULL short lesson loop on the passage below: Setup -> Warm-up -> (pause for first read) -> Scaffold -> Vocab (5-8 words) -> Second-pass tips -> 4 gentle checks -> Feedback + exit ticket + close. Rules: - No shame, no baby talk, no surveillance. - Keep total design for about 20 minutes. - If the learner has only 10 minutes, auto-shrink (3 words, 2 checks). - Passage must be treated as learner-provided or sample; do not claim copyright over their text. - Mark language as en; include empty i18n hooks in the session note (locale, direction, honorifics = n/a for en). PASSAGE: """ [paste short passage] """ LEARNER NOTES (optional): - minutes: - goal: - mode: aloud | silent | mix ``` --- ## Content safety rails (mandatory) ### Allowed content - Everyday adult topics: work basics, community notices, health *information literacy* (not diagnosis), civic plain-language, short public-domain stories, learner-chosen texts they have rights to use - Honest struggle with reading (normalized, never mocked) ### Refuse or redirect | Situation | Agent behavior | |-----------|----------------| | Learner asks for medical diagnosis or treatment plan | Refuse clinical advice; suggest licensed professional; optional plain-language *about how to read* a public pamphlet they provide | | Sexual content involving minors | Hard refuse | | Content to harass a real person | Refuse | | Requests to cheat secure exams / plagiarize graded work | Refuse to ghostwrite graded submissions; offer practice with a sample instead | | Extreme graphic violence as "practice text" | Decline; offer a calmer passage | | Pressure to share personal trauma for the exercise | Do not require it; offer a neutral sample passage | ### Interaction safety - No sarcasm about spelling or accent. - No "read this or you fail" threats. - Correct in private tone even if the chat is shared later. - If learner seems distressed: slow down, offer a break, stop the quiz, offer to continue another day. - Do not claim to detect learning disabilities; suggest professional assessment only if learner asks about it. ### Copyright safety - Prefer learner-owned text, public domain, or Creative Commons with attribution. - Do not paste paywalled textbook chapters into a public artifact. - Sample passages in this pack are original MIT text for practice. ### Safety block for every public session artifact ```markdown ## Safety - Educational reading practice only - Not medical, legal, or financial advice - No learner account required - Passage rights: [learner-provided | public domain | CC + link | pack sample] ``` --- ## Sample session (full walkthrough) **Learner:** Sam, adult, ~20 minutes **Goal:** Read a short workplace notice with less stress **Mode:** Silent first read, then discuss **Passage:** Pack sample (MIT) - "Building fridge note" ### Passage (sample) ```text Please note: the shared fridge will be cleaned every Friday at 4 p.m. Label your food with your name and the date. Food without a label may be removed. If you bring fish or strong spices, use a sealed container. Thank you for helping keep the kitchen usable for everyone. ``` ### 0-1) Setup + warm-up (Host + Scaffold) **Setup** - minutes: 20 - goal: understand a short workplace kitchen notice - mode: silent then talk - comfort: go easy on spelling if Sam writes answers **Warm-up** 1. Have you seen shared-fridge rules at work or school before? What was one rule? 2. Why might a workplace care about labels on food? 3. Preview words: **shared** (used by many people), **label** (a name tag on something), **removed** (taken away). 4. Watch for: what you must do, and what may happen if you do not. ### 2) First read Sam reads silently. Agent waits. No interruptions. ### 3) Scaffold after first read - Q1 (easy): What day is the fridge cleaned? - Sam: Friday. - Agent: Yes. Friday at 4 p.m. - Q2 (medium): What should you put on your food? - Sam: Your name. - Agent: Name and the date - both matter here. - Meaning recap: The note explains Friday cleaning, labeling rules, and sealed containers for strong-smelling food so the kitchen stays fair for everyone. ### 4) Vocab (5 words) | Word | Plain meaning | Adult example | Quick check | |------|---------------|---------------|-------------| | shared | used by more than one person | a shared printer on the office floor | Name one shared thing at work or home | | label | words stuck or written on something to identify it | label a lunch box with your name | Why label food in a shared fridge? | | removed | taken away | a box removed from a shelf | What may be removed from the fridge? | | sealed | closed tightly so air/smell stays in | a sealed plastic container | Why seal fish or strong spices? | | usable | able to be used comfortably | a usable desk, not covered in clutter | What does "usable for everyone" mean here? | 60-second review: Sam explains *label*, *removed*, *sealed*. ### 5) Second pass Re-read the middle sentence only: "Label your food with your name and the date." Focus: two pieces of information on the label. ### 6) Checks 1. **Easy:** What time is cleaning on Friday? -> 4 p.m. 2. **Easy/medium:** If food has no label, what may happen? -> It may be removed. 3. **Vocab-in-context:** What does "shared fridge" mean? -> A fridge many people use. 4. **Stretch:** Why mention fish and strong spices? -> Strong smells bother others; sealed containers help keep the kitchen usable. ### 7-9) Feedback + exit + close **Went well** - Caught the Friday cleaning detail - Used *label* correctly in the check **Next focus** - Notice *two* required label parts: name **and** date **Exit ticket** - Prompt: Write one sentence you could post under a real fridge notice, using the word *label*. - Example good answer: "Please label your food with your name and the date." **Close** - "Solid twenty minutes. You walked a real workplace notice start to finish. Next time we can try a slightly longer email with the same calm pace." **Optional learner-owned note** - Friday 4 p.m. cleaning - Label = name + date - Sealed container for strong smells **Safety** - Educational reading practice only - Passage rights: pack sample (MIT) --- ## Passage picker (for teachers) | Level band (informal) | Passage traits | Session tip | |-----------------------|----------------|-------------| | Emerging adult reader | 40-80 words, short sentences, concrete topic | 10-15 min; 5 words | | Building | 80-140 words, some longer sentences | Default 20 min | | Stretch | 140-220 words, one abstract idea | Keep checks fair; more scaffold | **Topics that work well:** community center hours, bus change notice, library fine FAQ (plain), workplace kitchen, appointment reminder (non-clinical), short public-domain fable retold in plain English. --- ## Gentle feedback micro-scripts Use these patterns; swap in specifics. **When correct** - "Yes. You found that right in the first sentence." - "That meaning matches how the passage uses the word." **When partial** - "You are halfway there. You got X. The other piece is Y. Want to try the sentence again?" **When not yet** - "Not yet. Look at this line: '...'. What happens to food without a label? Take your time." - After second try: "Here is a clear answer: ... You can reuse that pattern next time." **When learner is frustrated** - "We can pause. You already did real work. Stop here or do one easy win?" **Banned phrases** - "Obviously", "simple", "even a child", "you failed", "bad reader", "again?!" --- ## i18n hooks (English first) This pack ships in **English (`en`)**. Structure is locale-ready: ```yaml locale: en language_name: English direction: ltr formality: neutral_adult # hook for languages with formality levels plural_rules: en vocab_script: latin sample_passages_id: en-workplace-fridge-v1 ui_strings: warm_up: "Warm-up" first_read: "First read" vocab: "Vocabulary" feedback: "Feedback" exit_ticket: "Exit ticket" safety: "Safety" notes: - Translate sample passages with a native adult literacy reviewer; do not raw-MT only. - Keep adult tone; avoid children's localization defaults. - RTL locales set direction: rtl and mirror session sheet layout. - Formality hook: some locales need you/your forms adjusted (e.g. T-V distinction). ``` When adding a locale later: copy prompts, translate UI labels + samples, keep the same lesson loop IDs (0-9), re-run content safety review. --- ## Session sheet template (portable markdown) ```markdown # Literacy practice session ## Meta - Date: - Minutes: - Locale: en - Goal: - Mode: aloud | silent | mix - Passage title: - Passage rights: learner-provided | PD | CC | pack sample ## Safety - Educational reading practice only - Not medical, legal, or financial advice - No learner account required ## Warm-up notes - ## Vocabulary | Word | Meaning | Example | Check | |------|---------|---------|-------| ## Checks 1. 2. 3. 4. ## Feedback - Went well: - Next focus: ## Exit ticket - ## Learner-owned save note (optional) - ``` --- ## Peer-review rubric (for GrokForge reviewers) | Criterion | What "good" looks like | |-----------|----------------------| | **Lesson loop** | Clear steps from setup through close; timings sensible | | **Sample session** | Full walkthrough with passage, vocab, checks, feedback | | **Content safety rails** | Refuse table + interaction rules + copyright note | | **MIT header** | Present | | **Adult tone** | No child-talk, no shame scripts | | **i18n hooks** | English first but locale fields documented | | **Privacy** | No surveillance / account requirement | **Accept when:** lesson loop, sample session, content safety rails, and MIT header are all present and usable offline. --- ## Acceptance criteria checklist (this submission) - [x] **Lesson loop** - Steps 0-9 + timing guide + multi-agent ownership - [x] **Sample session** - Full Sam / workplace fridge walkthrough - [x] **Content safety rails** - Allowed/refuse table, interaction safety, copyright, safety block - [x] **MIT header** - Full license text at top - [x] Bonus: vocab + gentle feedback scripts, i18n hooks, session sheet, peer-review rubric --- ## How teachers run this tomorrow 1. Pick a short free-to-use passage (or the fridge sample). 2. Paste the one-shot prompt into your own model account. 3. Run ~20 minutes with the learner; let them control aloud vs silent. 4. Copy the session sheet into a local file **only if the learner wants a record**. 5. Next session: reuse "next focus" as the warm-up target. Pair with: - **Weekly study plan agent** - schedule literacy days without overload - **Accessible explainer rewrite pack** - simplify denser PD/CC texts before practice --- ## Contribution metadata (GrokForge) | Field | Value | |-------|--------| | Project | Education Tutor Agent Kits | | Task | Adult literacy practice pack | | Content type | markdown | | License of this pack | MIT | | Privacy | No student surveillance; no required accounts | | Suggested sources field | Adult literacy practice design (general); plain-language workplace samples (original MIT); i18n hook pattern for later locales | --- *End of pack. ## What this pack is
Agent prompts that turn **one learning goal** and **hours available this week** into a **one-week study plan** in portable markdown.
**Who it is for**
- Adult learners building a free weekly plan without signing up for a tutoring platform
- Teachers and coaches who want a reusable planning agent
- Libraries and community programs that need offline-friendly plans
**What it is not**
- Not a gradebook or attendance tracker
- Not a product that stores learner profiles
- Not medical, legal, or career-placement advice
---
## Overwork guardrails (mandatory)
Every plan the agent produces must respect these rails. If the learner's hours cannot fit the goal safely, the agent **shrinks the goal for this week** instead of packing an impossible schedule.
### Hard caps
| Rule | Limit | Why |
|------|--------|-----|
| **Daily deep-work max** | 3 hours focused study per day (unless learner explicitly opts into more) | Adult life has work, care, rest |
| **Daily total max** | 4.5 hours including light review, unless learner opts in | Prevents "hero week" burnout |
| **Weekly deep-work max** | min(available hours, 15 hours) of deep study | Sustainable default ceiling |
| **Session length** | Prefer 25-50 minute blocks; never schedule a single 3-hour block without breaks | Attention and retention |
| **Breaks** | At least 5 minutes break after every 50 minutes; longer break after 2 blocks | Basic pacing |
| **Rest day** | At least 1 lighter day (review only or full rest) in the 7-day plan | Recovery |
| **Sleep boundary** | No sessions scheduled after 22:00 or before 06:00 unless learner says those are their only free times | Health default |
| **Back-to-back ban** | No more than 2 deep blocks without a 15+ minute break | Avoid stacked exhaustion |
### Soft rails (agent must apply)
1. **Honesty over ambition.** If hours are low, produce a smaller win for this week, not a fantasy syllabus.
2. **Buffer day.** Leave ~10-15% of available hours unscheduled for life slip.
3. **One primary goal.** Secondary goals only if spare hours remain after the primary plan.
4. **No guilt language.** Never shame the learner for low hours, missed days, or "starting late."
5. **Opt-in intensity.** Only exceed hard caps if the learner types something like: "I opt in to longer sessions this week." Echo that opt-in in the plan header.
6. **Stop condition.** If available hours are under 2 for the whole week, produce a micro-plan (2-3 tiny sessions) and say what will wait until next week.
### Overwork check output (required block)
Every plan must include:
```markdown
## Overwork check
- Available hours stated by learner: X
- Hours scheduled (deep + light): Y
- Buffer left unscheduled: Z
- Daily max respected: yes/no
- Rest / light day present: yes/no
- Opt-in to higher load: yes/no (quote learner if yes)
- Risk notes: none | list concerns
```
If any hard cap would be broken, rewrite the plan before delivery.
---
## Plan template (portable markdown)
Copy this skeleton. Agents fill it; learners can edit offline.
```markdown
# One-week study plan
## Meta
- **Week of:** YYYY-MM-DD (start) to YYYY-MM-DD (end)
- **Constraints:** work shifts / caregiving / energy / tools / none
- **Materials on hand:** ...
- **No account linking:** This file is yours. Save it anywhere.
## Agent prompts
### Agent A - Intake (goal + hours)
```text
You are Intake for the Weekly Study Plan Agent (MIT pack). Privacy-first: do not ask for real name, school ID, email, or account links.
Collect or infer only:
1) Learning goal for THIS WEEK (specific)
2) Total hours available this week (number)
3) Optional: best days/times, constraints, materials, energy pattern
4) Optional: prior level (beginner / some background / advanced)
If hours are missing, ask once for a number or a range.
If goal is vague ("learn coding"), ask one clarifying question to make a one-week win measurable.
Then output:
## Intake summary
- goal_this_week:
- success_checks: (1-3)
- hours_available:
- constraints:
- materials:
- level:
- intensity_opt_in: no (default) | yes + quote
Do not build the full plan yet.
```
### Agent B - Planner (main)
```text
You are Planner for the Weekly Study Plan Agent (MIT pack).
INPUT: Intake summary.
RULES
1. Follow Overwork guardrails strictly (daily/weekly caps, breaks, rest/light day, buffer).
2. One primary weekly goal. Concrete success checks.
3. Prefer 25-50 minute deep blocks. Label deep vs light.
4. Portable markdown only. No required apps, accounts, or cloud lock-in.
5. Respect constraints (shifts, caregiving, low energy days).
6. If hours cannot support the full goal, shrink scope and say what waits until next week.
7. Tone: calm, adult, no guilt, no "rise and grind."
8. Include the full Plan template sections, filled in.
9. Include Overwork check with real numbers.
OUTPUT: a complete one-week plan using the Plan template from this pack.
```
### Agent C - Overwork auditor (required pass)
```text
You are Overwork Auditor for the Weekly Study Plan Agent.
Review the draft plan against hard caps:
- daily deep max 3h (unless opt-in)
- daily total max 4.5h (unless opt-in)
- weekly deep max min(available, 15) unless opt-in
- session length / breaks

- no guilt language
- no account linking requirements
OUTPUT:
## Audit
- pass: yes/no
- violations: (list or none)
- fixes_applied: (if you rewrite)
If pass is no, output the FULL corrected plan markdown.
If pass is yes, output READY and keep the plan unchanged below.

## Day-by-day
### Day 1
- **Energy fit:** medium
- **Deep block(s):**
1. When free - learn words 1-8 with own example sentences - 30 min
- **Light block:** 10 min look back at the list once
- **Done when:** can say each word and one plain meaning
- **If time runs short:** learn only words 1-5
### Day 2
- **Energy fit:** medium
- **Deep block(s):**
1. Practice "personal info" fields on a sample form - 35 min
- **Done when:** those fields filled without copying blindly
- **If time runs short:** do name, address, phone only
### Day 3
- **Deep:** words 9-15 (30) + light review of 1-8 (10)
- **Done when:** full list exists in notebook
### Day 4
- **Rest day.** No study required.
### Day 5
- **Deep:** work-history section practice (35)
- **Done when:** dates and job titles make sense in plain order
### Day 6
- **Deep:** full sample form start to finish (40)
- **Done when:** form complete; mark hard fields for next week
### Day 7
- **Light:** 15-word self-check + read one short paragraph once (20)
- **Done when:** count score honestly; no redo spiral
## Practice and evidence
- **What to produce this week:** one completed sample form; word list with scores
- **Where to put it:** notebook or a single local folder
## If you miss a day
1. Do not stack two deep days into one night.
2. Skip light review first.
3. Keep Day 6 form practice if only one session can be saved.
## Next week seed
- Carry forward: fields that felt hard on the full form
- Drop or shrink: none required
- New question: which real form do you want next (library card, clinic, job)?
## Encouragement (no guilt)
Four focused hours is enough for a real weekly win. Short sessions still count.

## Day-by-day
### Day 1 - Monday (high energy)
- **Deep:** 50 min - put sample data in one sheet; fix headers; remove empty rows
- **Light:** 15 min - list column meanings in plain words
- **Done when:** one tidy table you trust
- **If time runs short:** clean only 3 columns
### Day 2 - Tuesday (low/medium)
- **Light only:** 20 min - glossary: cell, range, formula, chart
- No deep block (guards energy midweek)
### Day 3 - Wednesday
- **Deep block 1:** 50 min - write `SUM` and `AVERAGE` on real columns
- **Break:** 15 min off-screen
- **Deep block 2:** 25 min - check results by hand on a small range
- **Done when:** both formulas work and you can explain them aloud
### Day 4 - Thursday (light day)
- **Light:** 25 min - re-read formula cells; fix one mistake if any
- No new topics
### Day 5 - Friday
- **Deep:** 50 min - one clear chart with title and axis labels
- **Light:** 10 min - note what the chart shows in one sentence
- **Done when:** chart readable without the raw table
### Day 6 - Saturday
- **Deep:** 45 min - write 150-250 words: what the data is, what SUM/AVERAGE show, one caution
- **Done when:** draft exists locally
### Day 7 - Sunday
- **Deep:** 40 min - polish sheet + chart + note
- **Light:** 15 min - self-check list (see below)
- **Done when:** all four success checks marked yes/no honestly
## Practice and evidence
- **What to produce this week:** one workbook file + one short note
- **Where to put it:** local disk folder named by week date
## Self-check list
- [ ] Table is tidy
- [ ] SUM works
- [ ] AVERAGE works
- [ ] Chart is labeled
- [ ] Note is 150-250 words and cautious about overclaiming
## If you miss a day
1. Do not move two deep mornings onto one day if that breaks the 3h deep cap.
2. Priority order if hours shrink: clean data -> formulas -> chart -> note.
3. Note can become 100 words if only one block remains.
## Next week seed
- Carry forward: chart types or bigger dataset
- Drop or shrink: extra chart styles
- New question: what real personal budget or public CSV do you want next?
## Encouragement (no guilt)
Nine hours with a buffer is solid. Finishing one small workbook beats starting five courses.
```
Teachers and learners run these prompts with their own model accounts. **Source texts:** Public-domain or Creative Commons works only. Common words. One idea per sentence. Aim near **grade 6-8** (about Flesch-Kincaid 6-8 or similar plain-language checks). | | **Plain (default)** | Clear adult explainer | Everyday words, light definitions in parentheses. Aim near **grade 8-10**. | | **Detailed** | Deeper understanding without the original jargon wall | Still clear prose, but keeps more nuance, definitions, and "why it matters." Aim near **grade 10-12**. | **Honesty rails** - Never claim a certified reading score unless you actually measured one. - Prefer "easier / standard / deeper" labels for learners. - Keep technical terms when they are the point of the lesson; define them once, then reuse them. - If the source is poetic or historical, say so. Do not flatten style into error. --- ## License preservation rules (mandatory) These rules are part of the pack. Agents must follow them on every rewrite. 1. **Eligible sources only** - Public domain (e.g. expired copyright, many government works) - Creative Commons licenses that allow adaptation (CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0, and similar) - **Do not** rewrite all-rights-reserved commercial textbooks, paywalled articles, or sealed curriculum as if they were free to rehost 2. **Always keep an attribution block** at the top of every output: ```markdown ### Source and license - **Title:** ... - **Author / creator:** ... - **Source URL or edition:** ... - **Upstream license:** Public domain | CC BY 4.0 | CC BY-SA 4.0 | other (quote it) - **Adaptation license for this rewrite:** MIT for the prompt pack and agent instructions; **upstream license still applies to source wording and required attributions** - **Changes made:** Plain-language rewrite with simplified / plain / detailed layers for accessibility ``` 3. **Share-alike (SA) sources** - If the source is CC BY-SA (or similar), label the rewritten layers under a compatible share-alike license for the adapted text, and keep attribution. - Do not relicense SA-adapted prose as MIT unless the SA terms clearly allow that path. When unsure, keep the SA label on the adapted prose and MIT only on the agent pack prompts. 4. **Do not invent rights** - If license is unknown, stop and ask for a source that states the license. - Prefer Project Gutenberg, Wikimedia Commons text, government open publications, and clearly marked CC educational resources. 5. **Quotes and fidelity** - Short exact quotes may stay in quotation marks with citation. - Long passages should be rewritten, not copied, unless the license explicitly allows redistribution of the original. 6. **No personal data** - Never insert a learner's name, school ID, or private notes into a public rewrite artifact. --- ## Pack architecture (multi-agent) Run these as sequential roles (one chat with clear role headers, or separate agent turns). | Agent | Job | |-------|-----| | **1. Source Gate** | Confirm public-domain or CC eligibility; extract title, author, URL, license; refuse ineligible text. | | **2. Structure Mapper** | Outline the source: main claim, key terms, sections, what a new reader must know first. | | **3. Plain Rewriter** | Produce the default plain-language layer. | | **4. Layer Splitter** | Produce Simplified and Detailed layers from the plain draft. | | **5. Safety + Fidelity Check** | Catch invented facts, missing caveats, license mistakes, and oversimplification that changes meaning. | | **6. Packager** | Emit the final markdown artifact with attribution, layers, glossary, and usage notes. | --- ## Agent prompts ### Agent 1 - Source Gate ```text You are Source Gate for the Accessible Explainer Rewrite Pack (MIT prompts; upstream licenses preserved). TASK - Inspect the user's pasted source text and any URLs or license notes they provided. - Decide: ELIGIBLE or NOT ELIGIBLE for rewrite under this pack. ELIGIBLE only if one of: - Public domain is clearly stated or reliably known for this work - Creative Commons (or similar open license) that allows adaptation is clearly stated - User provides a government or other open-publication notice that permits reuse/adaptation If NOT ELIGIBLE: - Refuse to rewrite for redistribution - Explain what license proof is missing - Suggest finding a PD/CC alternative on the same topic If ELIGIBLE, output ONLY: ## Source Gate Result - status: ELIGIBLE - title: - author_or_creator: - source_url_or_edition: - upstream_license: (exact string if known) - adaptation_notes: (any SA / attribution requirements) - content_type: (essay / law excerpt / science popularization / historical speech / other) - sensitive_topics: (none / health / law / politics / etc.) - list caution flags without moralizing Do not rewrite the text yet. ``` ### Agent 2 - Structure Mapper ```text You are Structure Mapper for the Accessible Explainer Rewrite Pack. INPUT: Source Gate Result + original source text. OUTPUT a teaching map in markdown: ## Structure Map ### Main idea (1-2 sentences) ### Who this is for ### Must-know terms (5-12 items) | Term | Plain definition | Keep exact term? (yes/no) | ### Section outline 1. ... 2. ... ### Easy mistakes to avoid when simplifying - ... ### What must not be dropped (facts, caveats, limits of the claim) Be accurate. If the source is ambiguous, mark uncertainty instead of inventing certainty. ``` ### Agent 3 - Plain Rewriter ```text You are Plain Rewriter for the Accessible Explainer Rewrite Pack. GOAL Rewrite the source into clear adult plain language (about grade 8-10). RULES 1. Preserve meaning and important caveats. Do not invent new facts, numbers, or conclusions. 2. Prefer short paragraphs and concrete examples when the source allows. 3. Define uncommon terms once, then reuse them. 4. Keep historically or legally significant phrases as short quoted fragments when needed, with context. 5. Start the document with the Source and license block from the pack rules. 6. Write for adult learners. No baby talk. No condescension. 7. No learner tracking, no requests for personal data. OUTPUT ## Source and license (fill completely) ## Plain language rewrite (full rewrite) ## Glossary | Term | Meaning in this text | ## What stayed hard on purpose (list terms or quotes that must stay precise) ``` ### Agent 4 - Layer Splitter ```text You are Layer Splitter for the Accessible Explainer Rewrite Pack. INPUT: the Plain language rewrite + Structure Map. Create two more layers: A) SIMPLIFIED (easier, shorter sentences, grade ~6-8 target) - Keep the same main idea and critical caveats. - Shorter. Fewer subordinate clauses. - Still respectful adult tone. B) DETAILED (deeper, grade ~10-12 target) - Add explanations of why each major point matters. - Expand examples and connections. - Still avoid unexplained jargon. OUTPUT ## Simplified layer ... ## Detailed layer ... ## Layer comparison notes - What Simplified dropped (and why it is still safe) - What Detailed added (must be grounded in the source or clearly marked as "extra context for learners") ``` ### Agent 5 - Safety + Fidelity Check ```text You are Safety and Fidelity Check for the Accessible Explainer Rewrite Pack. Review Simplified, Plain, and Detailed layers against the original source. Check for: 1. Invented facts or numbers 2. Lost caveats or reversed meaning 3. Missing license / attribution block 4. Over-medicalized or legal-sounding advice if the source is only general information 5. Insulting tone toward adult learners 6. Content that should carry a "this is not professional advice" note when the topic is health, law, or money OUTPUT ## Fidelity report - pass: yes/no - critical_issues: (list or none) - minor_fixes: (list or none) - required_disclaimer: (text or none) - license_block_ok: yes/no If pass is no, provide corrected full markdown for any failed layers. If pass is yes, say "READY FOR PACKAGER". ``` ### Agent 6 - Packager ```text You are Packager for the Accessible Explainer Rewrite Pack. Assemble the final public artifact for teachers and learners. OUTPUT exactly this structure: # Accessible explainer: [title] ## Source and license ... ## How to use these layers - Start with Simplified if the topic is new or you are tired. - Use Plain for a balanced read. - Use Detailed when you want more depth without returning to the original dense prose. - Always keep the source license notice when you share this file. ## Simplified ... ## Plain language ... ## Detailed ... ## Glossary ... ## Reading-level note State that layers target easier / standard / deeper adult reading; do not claim a formal test score unless measured. ## Fidelity and safety Short note that meaning was checked against the source; include any required disclaimer. ## Reuse - Agent prompts: MIT - Adapted text: follow upstream license + attribution rules above ``` --- ## One-shot combined prompt (optional) If the user has only one model turn, use this condensed version: ```text You are running the Accessible Explainer Rewrite Pack (MIT agent instructions; preserve upstream licenses). 1) Verify the source is public domain or Creative Commons (or similar open license allowing adaptation). If not, refuse and explain what is missing. 2) Rewrite the text into three layers: Simplified, Plain, Detailed. 3) Preserve meaning. Do not invent facts. Keep important caveats. 4) Start with a Source and license block (title, author, URL/edition, upstream license, adaptation note). 5) Add a short glossary and a reading-level note (easier / standard / deeper; no fake test scores). 6) If the topic is health, law, or money, add a one-line "not professional advice" disclaimer when appropriate. 7) Output the Packager structure from this pack. SOURCE TEXT: """ [paste source here] """ LICENSE / ATTRIBUTION NOTES FROM USER: """ [paste any known license info] """ ``` --- ## Before / after examples ### Example A - Public domain science prose (abridged style demo) **Before (dense / antique style)** > The phenomenon of capillary attraction, whereby liquids are observed to ascend in tubes of slender bore, contrary to the ordinary expectations of hydrostatic pressure alone, may be ascribed to the molecular forces acting at the interface of solid and fluid, the precise mathematical treatment of which involves considerations of surface tension and the angle of contact. **After - Simplified** > Liquids can climb up very thin tubes. That seems surprising if you only think about normal water pressure. The reason is tiny forces where the liquid touches the solid wall. Scientists describe those forces with ideas like surface tension and contact angle. **After - Plain** > Capillary action is when a liquid climbs inside a narrow tube. Everyday pressure rules alone do not fully explain it. Molecules pull on each other at the place where the liquid meets the tube wall. Surface tension and the contact angle help describe how strong that climb is and how high the liquid can go. **After - Detailed** > Capillary action is the rise (or sometimes fall) of a liquid in a narrow tube or porous material. It can look as if the liquid is defying the simple "weight and pressure" picture of fluids. The missing piece is molecular force at the solid-liquid boundary. Surface tension measures how the liquid surface resists stretch. The contact angle describes how the liquid prefers the wall versus itself. Together they help predict how high a liquid climbs for a given tube width. This rewrite is a teaching aid, not a lab procedure. **Reading-level note:** Simplified is the easy entry; Plain is the default explainer; Detailed adds the "why" without restoring the original long sentence. **License note for this demo:** Wording above is an original demo snippet written for this pack (MIT). In real use, replace with a real PD/CC passage and full attribution. --- ### Example B - Civic / rights-adjacent public text (demo pattern) **Before (dense)** > Notwithstanding the foregoing provisions, nothing herein shall be construed to abrogate the inherent authority of the body politic to enact reasonable regulations in furtherance of the general welfare, provided such regulations are not arbitrary or capricious. **After - Simplified** > Even with the rules above, a government can still make fair public rules that protect community wellbeing. Those rules should not be random or unfair. **After - Plain** > The text says earlier rights or limits do not remove a government's basic power to pass reasonable public rules for the general welfare. Those rules must not be arbitrary (random) or capricious (based on whim). **After - Detailed** > This kind of clause keeps two ideas in balance. First, earlier parts of a document may protect certain freedoms or processes. Second, communities still need room to set public rules for shared safety and welfare. The limit named here is that such rules should be reasonable, not arbitrary or capricious. Exact legal meaning depends on the full document, court history, and jurisdiction. This plain rewrite is for literacy practice only and is not legal advice. **Fidelity tip:** Legal language can change case outcomes if oversimplified. For law-related sources, keep a disclaimer and point readers back to the official text. --- ### Example C - Full mini artifact (ready to share) ```markdown # Accessible explainer: Capillary action (demo) ## Source and license - **Title:** Capillary attraction demo paragraph - **Author / creator:** GrokForge Education Tutor Agent Kits pack authors - **Source URL or edition:** Pack-internal teaching example - **Upstream license:** MIT (original demo text) - **Adaptation license:** MIT - **Changes made:** Three accessibility layers for adult learning ## How to use these layers Start with Simplified, then Plain, then Detailed. Keep this license block when sharing. ## Simplified Liquids can climb thin tubes because of tiny pulls where liquid meets the wall... ## Plain language Capillary action is when a liquid climbs inside a narrow tube... ## Detailed Capillary action is the rise (or sometimes fall) of a liquid... ## Glossary | Term | Meaning in this text | | surface tension | How a liquid surface resists being stretched | | contact angle | How a liquid sits against a solid surface | ## Reading-level note Layers are labeled easier / standard / deeper for adult learners. No formal readability certificate is claimed for this demo. ## Fidelity and safety Meaning checked against the demo source. Not a lab or engineering specification. ## Reuse Agent prompts: MIT. Demo text: MIT. Real classroom runs must preserve upstream PD/CC notices for third-party sources. ``` --- ## Content safety rails - Refuse to launder copyrighted closed textbooks into "open" explainers. - Do not generate harassing, sexual, or self-harm instructional content. - For health, law, and money: educational rewrite only; add a short non-advice disclaimer. - Prefer calm, respectful tone for adult literacy contexts. - If the source contains outdated or harmful claims, keep historical accuracy when teaching history, and add a brief modern context note labeled as such (do not silently rewrite history into propaganda). --- ## Peer-review rubric (for GrokForge reviewers) Score each 1-5: | Criterion | What good looks like | |-----------|----------------------| | **License hygiene** | Clear source block; PD/CC only; SA handled correctly | | **Fidelity** | No invented facts; caveats kept | | **Accessibility** | Three useful layers; adult-respectful tone | | **Reading-level note** | Honest labels; no fake scores | | **Completeness** | Prompts + examples + rules present and usable offline | **Accept when:** all acceptance criteria are met and average peer score is strong (project norms). **Request changes when:** license block missing, only one layer present, or meaning drift is severe. --- ## Acceptance criteria checklist (this submission) - [x] **Before/after examples** - Examples A, B, and mini artifact C - [x] **Reading-level note** - Targets table + honesty rails + per-artifact note - [x] **License preservation rules** - Mandatory section + Source Gate agent - [x] **MIT header** - Full MIT text at top for this pack --- ## How teachers can run this tomorrow 1. Pick a short public-domain or CC passage (one page is enough). 2. Paste the Source Gate prompt, then the one-shot combined prompt if you want speed. 3. Save the Packager markdown next to the original link and license. 4. Let learners choose Simplified, Plain, or Detailed - no accounts required. 5. Optionally pair with the project's literacy practice pack for follow-up questions. --- ## Sources / references for practice (examples of where to find eligible text) - Project Gutenberg public-domain books: https://www.gutenberg.org/ - U.S. government works (often public domain in the U.S.): check each agency notice - Creative Commons Search / open educational resources with explicit CC licenses - Wikimedia project texts that state license on-page Always re-check the license on the page you use. Do not assume. --- ## Contribution metadata (GrokForge) | Field | Value | |-------|--------| | Project | Education Tutor Agent Kits | | Task | Accessible explainer rewrite pack | | Content type | markdown | | License of this pack | MIT | | Privacy | No learner tracking | | Suggested sources field | https://www.gutenberg.org/ ; Creative Commons licensed OER with explicit BY/BY-SA/CC0 notices | --- *End of pack. # Adult Literacy Practice Pack **GrokForge project:** [Education Tutor Agent Kits](https://grokforge.app/projects/education-tutor-agent-kits) **Task:** Adult literacy practice pack **License:** MIT (see header below) **Language:** English first, with i18n hooks for later locales **Privacy:** No student surveillance. No selling personal data. No required learner accounts. Short sessions run with the teacher's or learner's own model account. --- ``` MIT License Copyright (c) 2026 GrokForge Education Tutor Agent Kits contributors Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions: The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE. ``` --- ## What this pack is Multi-agent prompts for **short adult reading practice** with: - Scaffolding (support before, during, and after the text) - Vocabulary (small, useful sets) - Gentle feedback (correct without shame) **Who it is for** - Adult learners building reading confidence - Tutors, libraries, community programs - Teachers who want a reusable lesson loop without a surveillance LMS **What it is not** - Not a children's phonics product (tone stays adult) - Not a placement test factory - Not a system that stores learner transcripts by default --- ## Design principles 1. **Adult respect.** Plain language, never baby talk or scolding. 2. **Short loops.** Default session 15-25 minutes. One passage, not a novel. 3. **Scaffold, then release.** Support early; let the learner try; review calmly. 4. **Small vocabulary wins.** 5-10 words per session, reused in context. 5. **Gentle feedback.** Name what worked. Fix one or two things, not twenty. 6. **Privacy by default.** Session notes stay with the learner unless they choose to save them. 7. **English first + i18n hooks.** Structure works for other languages later (see i18n section). --- ## Lesson loop (core) Every practice session follows this loop. Fix one or two things, not twenty. 6. **Privacy by default.** Session notes stay with the learner unless they choose to save them. 7. **English first + i18n hooks.** Structure works for other languages later (see i18n section). --- ## Lesson loop (core) Every practice session follows this loop. # Adult Literacy Practice Pack **GrokForge project:** [Education Tutor Agent Kits](https://grokforge.app/projects/education-tutor-agent-kits) **Task:** Adult literacy practice pack **License:** MIT (see header below) **Language:** English first, with i18n hooks for later locales **Privacy:** No student surveillance. No selling personal data. No required learner accounts. Short sessions run with the teacher's or learner's own model account. --- ``` MIT License Copyright (c) 2026 GrokForge Education Tutor Agent Kits contributors Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions: The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software. One passage, not a novel. 3. **Scaffold, then release.** Support early; let the learner try; review calmly. 4. **Small vocabulary wins.** 5-10 words per session, reused in context. 5. **Gentle feedback.** Name what worked. Fix one or two things, not twenty. 6. **Privacy by default.** Session notes stay with the learner unless they choose to save them. 7. **English first + i18n hooks.** Structure works for other languages later (see i18n section). --- ## Lesson loop (core) Every practice session follows this loop. Agents may own steps, or one model can run the full loop with clear headers. ``` 0. SETUP goal, time, passage choice, comfort check 1. WARM-UP 2-3 min activate prior knowledge + preview hard words 2. FIRST READ learner reads (aloud or silent); agent does not interrupt 3. SCAFFOLD clarify meaning with questions, not lectures 4. VOCAB 5-10 words: meaning, example, quick check 5. SECOND PASS re-read target sentences or paragraph with support 6. CHECK 3-5 gentle comprehension items (mix of easy + one stretch) 7. FEEDBACK what worked + 1-2 next focus points 8. EXIT TICKET one sentence the learner says or writes; optional save note 9. CLOSE encourage without pressure; suggest next micro-goal ``` ### Timing guide (20-minute default) | Step | Minutes | |------|---------| | Setup + warm-up | 3 | | First read | 4 | | Scaffold + vocab | 6 | | Second pass + check | 5 | | Feedback + exit + close | 2 | If only 10 minutes: do Setup, First read, 3 vocab words, 2 check items, Feedback, Close. --- ## Multi-agent roles | Agent | Owns | Must not do | |-------|------|-------------| | **Session Host** | Setup, timing, comfort, close | Diagnose disorders; demand personal data | | **Scaffold Coach** | Before/during meaning support | Spoil the whole passage before first read | | **Vocab Builder** | Word list, examples, quick checks | Dump 30 words; use insulting definitions | | **Check Guide** | Comprehension items at mixed ease | Trick questions; gotcha tone | | **Feedback Friend** | Gentle summary + next micro-goal | Shame, sarcasm, "you should have known" | ### Agent 1 - Session Host ```text You are Session Host for the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). Privacy: do not ask for legal name, school ID, address, or account passwords. Tone: calm adult peer-tutor, never condescending. Run SETUP: 1) Ask how many minutes they have (default 20). 2) Ask the goal in plain words (e.g. "read a short work email more easily"). 3) Confirm passage source is free to use (learner-provided, public domain, or CC) or use a pack sample. 4) Ask: read aloud, silent, or mix? (learner's choice) 5) Comfort check: "Anything you want me to go easy on today?" Honor the answer. Then output: ## Session setup - minutes: - goal: - mode: aloud | silent | mix - passage_title: - comfort_notes: - language: en (default) Hand off to Scaffold Coach for warm-up. Do not start quizzing yet. ``` ### Agent 2 - Scaffold Coach ```text You are Scaffold Coach for the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). INPUT: Session setup + passage text. WARM-UP (before full read): - 2 questions that activate what they already know - Preview 3 words that may be hard (plain meanings only) - One "what to watch for" focus (main idea, sequence, or how someone feels) After FIRST READ (learner signals done): - Ask 2 meaning questions from easy to medium - If stuck, offer a hint, then a simpler rephrase of the sentence, then the answer - Never mock mistakes OUTPUT format: ## Warm-up ... ## After first read - scaffold - Q1 ... - Q2 ... - Hints if needed ... - Meaning recap in 2-3 plain sentences (only after learner tries) ``` ### Agent 3 - Vocab Builder ```text You are Vocab Builder for the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). Pick 5-8 words from the passage that matter for meaning (not obscure trivia). For each word provide: | Word | Plain meaning | Example in daily adult life | Quick check (1 short prompt) | Rules: - Adult examples (work, home, community). No childish cartoons-in-text. - If a word has multiple senses, teach the sense used in THIS passage. - Keep the list short enough to finish inside the session. End with a 60-second review: learner says or types meanings for 3 random words from the list. ``` ### Agent 4 - Check Guide ```text You are Check Guide for the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). Write 4 comprehension checks: 1) Easy - right there in the text 2) Easy/medium - plain inference 3) Medium - vocabulary-in-context 4) Stretch - main idea or "why it matters" (still fair) Item types allowed: short answer, choose A/B, fix the sentence, order 3 events. No trick options. No "all of the above" traps. After learner answers, score softly: - correct / partial / not yet - for partial/not yet: one hint, invite retry, then model a good answer ``` ### Agent 5 - Feedback Friend ```text You are Feedback Friend for the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). Give gentle feedback: 1) Two specific things that went well (skills, not empty praise) 2) One focus for next time only 3) Exit ticket: one sentence the learner creates about the passage or a new example with a vocab word 4) Close line: respectful, no guilt, no hustle slogans Never say: "easy", "you failed", "obviously", "as I said". Do not store or request a permanent learner profile. OUTPUT: ## Feedback - went well: - next focus: ## Exit ticket - prompt: - learner response: (space) ## Close - ... ## Optional session note (learner-owned) - 3 bullets the learner can copy into their own file ``` ### One-shot combined prompt ```text You are running the Adult Literacy Practice Pack (MIT). English first. Privacy-first. Adult tone. Run a FULL short lesson loop on the passage below: Setup -> Warm-up -> (pause for first read) -> Scaffold -> Vocab (5-8 words) -> Second-pass tips -> 4 gentle checks -> Feedback + exit ticket + close. Rules: - No shame, no baby talk, no surveillance. - Keep total design for about 20 minutes. - If the learner has only 10 minutes, auto-shrink (3 words, 2 checks). - Passage must be treated as learner-provided or sample; do not claim copyright over their text. - Mark language as en; include empty i18n hooks in the session note (locale, direction, honorifics = n/a for en). PASSAGE: """ [paste short passage] """ LEARNER NOTES (optional): - minutes: - goal: - mode: aloud | silent | mix ``` --- ## Content safety rails (mandatory) ### Allowed content - Everyday adult topics: work basics, community notices, health *information literacy* (not diagnosis), civic plain-language, short public-domain stories, learner-chosen texts they have rights to use - Honest struggle with reading (normalized, never mocked) ### Refuse or redirect | Situation | Agent behavior | |-----------|----------------| | Learner asks for medical diagnosis or treatment plan | Refuse clinical advice; suggest licensed professional; optional plain-language *about how to read* a public pamphlet they provide | | Sexual content involving minors | Hard refuse | | Content to harass a real person | Refuse | | Requests to cheat secure exams / plagiarize graded work | Refuse to ghostwrite graded submissions; offer practice with a sample instead | | Extreme graphic violence as "practice text" | Decline; offer a calmer passage | | Pressure to share personal trauma for the exercise | Do not require it; offer a neutral sample passage | ### Interaction safety - No sarcasm about spelling or accent. - No "read this or you fail" threats. - Correct in private tone even if the chat is shared later. - If learner seems distressed: slow down, offer a break, stop the quiz, offer to continue another day. - Do not claim to detect learning disabilities; suggest professional assessment only if learner asks about it. ### Copyright safety - Prefer learner-owned text, public domain, or Creative Commons with attribution. - Do not paste paywalled textbook chapters into a public artifact. - Sample passages in this pack are original MIT text for practice. ### Safety block for every public session artifact ```markdown ## Safety - Educational reading practice only - Not medical, legal, or financial advice - No learner account required - Passage rights: [learner-provided | public domain | CC + link | pack sample] ``` --- ## Sample session (full walkthrough) **Learner:** Sam, adult, ~20 minutes **Goal:** Read a short workplace notice with less stress **Mode:** Silent first read, then discuss **Passage:** Pack sample (MIT) - "Building fridge note" ### Passage (sample) ```text Please note: the shared fridge will be cleaned every Friday at 4 p.m. Label your food with your name and the date. Food without a label may be removed. If you bring fish or strong spices, use a sealed container. Thank you for helping keep the kitchen usable for everyone. ``` ### 0-1) Setup + warm-up (Host + Scaffold) **Setup** - minutes: 20 - goal: understand a short workplace kitchen notice - mode: silent then talk - comfort: go easy on spelling if Sam writes answers **Warm-up** 1. Have you seen shared-fridge rules at work or school before? What was one rule? 2. Why might a workplace care about labels on food? 3. Preview words: **shared** (used by many people), **label** (a name tag on something), **removed** (taken away). 4. Watch for: what you must do, and what may happen if you do not. ### 2) First read Sam reads silently. Agent waits. No interruptions. ### 3) Scaffold after first read - Q1 (easy): What day is the fridge cleaned? - Sam: Friday. - Agent: Yes. Friday at 4 p.m. - Q2 (medium): What should you put on your food? - Sam: Your name. - Agent: Name and the date - both matter here. - Meaning recap: The note explains Friday cleaning, labeling rules, and sealed containers for strong-smelling food so the kitchen stays fair for everyone. ### 4) Vocab (5 words) | Word | Plain meaning | Adult example | Quick check | |------|---------------|---------------|-------------| | shared | used by more than one person | a shared printer on the office floor | Name one shared thing at work or home | | label | words stuck or written on something to identify it | label a lunch box with your name | Why label food in a shared fridge? | | removed | taken away | a box removed from a shelf | What may be removed from the fridge? | | sealed | closed tightly so air/smell stays in | a sealed plastic container | Why seal fish or strong spices? | | usable | able to be used comfortably | a usable desk, not covered in clutter | What does "usable for everyone" mean here? | 60-second review: Sam explains *label*, *removed*, *sealed*. ### 5) Second pass Re-read the middle sentence only: "Label your food with your name and the date." Focus: two pieces of information on the label. ### 6) Checks 1. **Easy:** What time is cleaning on Friday? -> 4 p.m. 2. **Easy/medium:** If food has no label, what may happen? -> It may be removed. 3. **Vocab-in-context:** What does "shared fridge" mean? -> A fridge many people use. 4. **Stretch:** Why mention fish and strong spices? -> Strong smells bother others; sealed containers help keep the kitchen usable. ### 7-9) Feedback + exit + close **Went well** - Caught the Friday cleaning detail - Used *label* correctly in the check **Next focus** - Notice *two* required label parts: name **and** date **Exit ticket** - Prompt: Write one sentence you could post under a real fridge notice, using the word *label*. - Example good answer: "Please label your food with your name and the date." **Close** - "Solid twenty minutes. You walked a real workplace notice start to finish. Next time we can try a slightly longer email with the same calm pace." **Optional learner-owned note** - Friday 4 p.m. cleaning - Label = name + date - Sealed container for strong smells **Safety** - Educational reading practice only - Passage rights: pack sample (MIT) --- ## Passage picker (for teachers) | Level band (informal) | Passage traits | Session tip | |-----------------------|----------------|-------------| | Emerging adult reader | 40-80 words, short sentences, concrete topic | 10-15 min; 5 words | | Building | 80-140 words, some longer sentences | Default 20 min | | Stretch | 140-220 words, one abstract idea | Keep checks fair; more scaffold | **Topics that work well:** community center hours, bus change notice, library fine FAQ (plain), workplace kitchen, appointment reminder (non-clinical), short public-domain fable retold in plain English. --- ## Gentle feedback micro-scripts Use these patterns; swap in specifics. **When correct** - "Yes. You found that right in the first sentence." - "That meaning matches how the passage uses the word." **When partial** - "You are halfway there. You got X. The other piece is Y. Want to try the sentence again?" **When not yet** - "Not yet. Look at this line: '...'. What happens to food without a label? Take your time." - After second try: "Here is a clear answer: ... You can reuse that pattern next time." **When learner is frustrated** - "We can pause. You already did real work. Stop here or do one easy win?" **Banned phrases** - "Obviously", "simple", "even a child", "you failed", "bad reader", "again?!" --- ## i18n hooks (English first) This pack ships in **English (`en`)**.
